The Thorny Soil

May 17, 2026    Jimmy Mattio

The thorny soil isn’t someone who rejects God. It’s someone who has been in church for years — giving, helping, serving — but can never quite get past the distractions, the worries, and the multiple love affairs with the things of this world.

In Part 3 of the Parable of the 4 Soils, Pastor Jimmy unpacks the most common and perhaps most heartbreaking soil of all — the thorny heart. The person who COULD be good soil. Who is deep enough, experienced enough, and has heard enough of the Word. But the thorns keep winning.

The worries of this life. The false appeal of wealth. The lure of self — my wants, my desires, my opinions, my plans. Social media. Busyness. The relentless pursuit of more. Jesus says all of it chokes the Word right out of us until no lasting fruit is produced.

The thorny soil person counts the cost of taking up their cross and decides it’s just too much to ask. They juggle multiple loves alongside Jesus — and wonder why they never find the freedom they’re looking for.

Self-inflicted wounds. A distracted heart. A divided commitment.

But here’s the hope — you can examine your soil today. You can ask God to show you what thorns need to be pulled. You can choose to make room for the Word to grow. God has always loved you. Always has and always will. No matter what. 💛
